That's right, I have obervations about the sports world that I need to get off my chest. AND...since this is my little world, I'll do it.
1) Floyd Landis lost his appeal to the US Anti-Doping Agency a few weeks ago. His next step is to make one last appeal to the CAS (world governing body) in Switzerland, which he has already announced he will do. So to be clear, by no means has he lost his 2006 Tour De France title in the eyes of the judicial system. Now, Cycling's governing body has decided the case is over and had a ceremony yesterday giving 2nd place finisher the title. To recap, Landis, still in the legal process. Cycling, given his title away. Maybe I am the only one, and I am not trying to say Landis is innocent, but give him a chance to defend himself fully. The World Anti-Doping agency does enough to make cyclists guilty until proven innocent, but how much would it damage the sport if they waited until Landis completed the legal process? C'mon...
2) The Ironman World Championships happened on Saturday in Kona, Hawaii with a bunch of crazy occurences. On the men's side, defending champ Normann Stadler got sick and dropped out. 2005 Champion Faris Al Sultan got sick and didn't start, neither did Kiwi Cameron Brown. Favorite Luke Bell dropped out because of injury and the door was opened for last year's runner-up, Chris Mccormack to take the win. Macca is not one of my favorite athletes, but I have an incredibly amount of respect for him and I think he is a great ambassador for the sport. On another note, 2-time champ Tim DeBoom had a great race and came in 4th. It is fantastic to see him back. On the women's sides, 2006 champ Michellie Jones dropped out, 6-time champ Natasha Badmann crashed out and last years runner up, Desiree Ficker had a terrible day finishing an hour and a half behind. The winner was Chrissie Wellington for the UK. She was an age grouper last year and in her first year as a pro she take the title...HOLY CRAP. That is about all I can say about that.
3) football, football...FOOTBALL. First off, wow, the Patriots are really good. The Cowboys are good, but not nearly as good. Adrian Peterson is the best rookie out there. And as for my favorite team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. BIG WIN. Prior to this game, they have given up 130 yards rushing over the 3 previous games. Now that is how you win...and I don't even miss Byron Leftwich. I guess the front office really did now what they were doing giving David Garrard the starting job at the end of the pre-season.
and finally...
4) Will the Colorado Rockies EVER lose again. 21 wins in 22 games and they swept the Phillies and now the Diamondbacks. They only thing that will slow them down is this 9 day layoff they have to see who will win between the Indians and Red Sox (2-1 Indians lead). It is awesome in this age of massive team salaries and egos to see a bunch of kids taking it to the big guys. Seriously, uber-pitcher Jeff Francis looks like he just walked off a little league field. Living in Boston, I have some obligation to root for the hometown team, but not if they get to the World Series. I am going to back a team that has guys named Tulowitzki, Hawpe, Holliday and Corpas...GO ROCKIES.
I feel better now...
Talk to you all later,
T-Guy J
