Rock N Roll Marathon Results
I'm glad that's over! My ankle is in pain, but I don't think the doc is going to put me down. I ended up finishing around when I thought I would. The night before the race, I told Mama Dummy I'd probably finish around 4:30ish.
The first half of the race, I couldn't believe how good I felt. During this time, I decided to give the ankle a ride and see what it could handle. I started to notice I was pulling 9min/miles. I was totally surprised. I thought I'd give it a shot.
I made a tactical error hammering the first half, but I wanted to pull off a sub-2 half mary (9:01 pace). I also was able to pull a sub hour 10k (9:03 pace). During the first 10k, I felt I had a very remote chance of going sub-4, so I tried. I was off to a good start by pulling the subs I did.
Unfortunately, accomplishing those things really didn't bode well for the rest of the race, as by mile 16 I was in major limping mode. From mile 14-16, I knew sub-4 was over. My lungs felt great, but my ankle was smoked. In fact, I never felt my lungs were fatigued the entire race; however, I could feel myself changing my stride. I felt it develop into some sore knees and throttled quads. I thought I could possibly pull around a 4:15-4:20.
By mile 20, I knew I was smoked. The overall 9:42 pace showed that. That is a dramatic drop in pace. It went downhill even further, as you can see from my 10:29 final pace. I walked quite a bit the last 10K, which obviously didn't help the pace! The last 10k, I thought if I pulled something with a 4:30 it would be a miracle!
It seems crazy to say that was a positive race for me, but I really believe it was. I am very happy with the first half. My stride was great. I hit all the miles I wanted. My nutrition was perfect. It really went great. The second half was really a mental victory. At times, it really felt worse than my Ironman marathon. Overall, my nutrition was fine. No problems. No major stomach issues. My only bother was obviously the ankle and my legs. I might have finished better had I not pushed the first half. Who knows? Hindsight is 20/20.
Another cool thing...I took an hour off of my Ironman marathon time. Makes sense...no swim, no bike; however, I know I can run a faster time at CdA. I walked a lot at IM Moo feeling at times the way I felt at RNR when I was still running. That shows me I could have pushed harder on the IM Moo marathon. I'm excited about that. That was a mental victory for me.
I'm glad I didn't switch over to the half mary. Considering how well I did on the half, I would have always wondered about the full had I not done it.
As far as the ankle, Mama Dummy made a suggestion to have it x-rayed when we get back home. She actually made the suggestion several weeks ago, but I didn't want to. Now I think it would be a good thing to check out. I'm going to take off a couple of weeks from running. My plan is to ramp up the swim and spend some time on the bike trainer.
I can't end this post without saying that I met a huge group of bloggers. I will post all the pics when I get home. In that group, I watched a couple of ladies run an amazing marathon. I don't want to steal their thunder, but they were amazing and motivated me beyond mention. I am very proud of them and honored to call them friends. Well done, Lana and Jenny!
As far as the half is concerned, I don't want to steal thunder either. Javamom and Marcy tore it up. So did some other bloggers: Mendy, Eric, Taryn and Pokey. WAY TO GO!
A new friend, Pat, ran his first marathon, too. 5:51:34. Great job, Pat!
